The GRADE report presents an assessment of the direct economic damage to buildings and infrastructure assets resulting from the earthquakes that affected Venezuela on June 24, 2026. The findings are intended to support emergency response and recovery planning, while providing an evidence base for strategic decision-making related to disaster risk reduction and resilience. The scope of the assessment is limited to direct physical asset damage and does not include estimates of indirect economic losses, social impacts, or post-disaster recovery and reconstruction needs, which may be addressed through subsequent assessments conducted by partner organizations.
The GRADE methodology is an established rapid post-disaster damage assessment framework that employs remote-based analytical techniques to estimate direct economic losses to the built environment. The methodology integrates earthquake hazard characterization, analytical damage modelling, structural engineering principles, exposure and vulnerability information, and capital stock valuation within a catastrophe risk modelling framework. Damage estimates are derived using publicly available geospatial, socioeconomic, and engineering datasets, enabling the timely production of consistent and transparent assessments in the immediate aftermath of a disaster.
